Your Dentist Knows Best

Don’t rush when you brush!

Did you know that one of the biggest issues is that the average patient doesn’t brush for long enough? Brushing requires a careful and thorough technique. Use a soft bristled toothbrush because plaque is a soft substance that should be removed easily. Once it’s calcified though, you need professional cleaning to remove it.

Visit your dentist regularly based on their customised advice

Did you know that it only takes 3 days for a cavity to start forming on a tooth? Did you also know that if cavities are caught in their early stages, they can actually be stopped or reversed with the right management? Did you know that gum disease is a “silent” condition which can cause the loss of bone support around your teeth irreversibly, eventually causing them to become loose and fall out? These are just a few reasons that regular visits to the dentist can improve your overall health whilst minimising the costs associated with dental care.

Don’t Forget to Floss!

Did you know that flossing is one of the best ways to prevent irreversible bone loss around the teeth? Flossing has actually been shown to reduce the risk of strokes and heart disease. We’ve always suspected that a chronic bacterial load in the mouth could cause more problems than just decay and gum disease. Start flossing for your holistic health needs.

We are a comprehensive Dentistry Practice

In general, we can approach dental care in two main ways.

One method is a problem-oriented approach. When there’s a problem, we fix it as quickly as possible.

However, the honest truth is that a reactionary approach doesn’t actually address the core reason why dental problems start in the first place.

At Smiles in Narrogin, we believe in “comprehensive” care. Identifying the needs of the whole mouth including issues associated with diet and oral hygiene is a critical aspect of ensuring that you don’t develop recurrent dental problems.

Dental problems are preventable! Just like obesity can be prevented through a good diet and exercise, dental health can be improved with a good diet, at-home good oral hygiene habits and a regular preventive maintenance plan with your dentist.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are some of the commonly asked questions we receive.

What causes decay?

Decay is primarily caused by a diet that’s too high in sugar. In the presence of plaque (bacteria), sugars are broken down into acids which slowly dissolve the teeth. Good saliva plays a part in preventing decay but diet is definitely the most important factor.

What is this all going to cost me?

We never provide treatment without estimating the cost. If ever ensure, ask what the treatment is going to cost before you have anything done. We always provide approximate treatment plans before embarking on any invasive treatment.

Do I more than one option?

Thankfully, in dentistry, we often have more than one option to treat a condition or missing teeth. Please feel free to ask for any alternative options but bare in mind, we have an ethical code of conduct to treat you appropriately as if we would our own friends or family. That means, that we can’t do anything to you that we feel is an unreasonable form of treatment.

I'm really nervous. Can you help me?

Dental anxiety is very common…probably even more common than you think. As a result, we have methods to help you have a stress-free dental visit. Make sure to ask the dentist about options for sedation for your treatment. We always discuss sedation for more complex or invasive procedures such as wisdom teeth removal.

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by chronic accumulation of bacteria in the form of plaque. It is the most common disease affecting man. As a result of continuous plaque accumulation, bone can be eroded around the teeth and teeth are at risk of falling out.

Is it going to hurt?

Dental treatment is done under anaesthetic when any discomfort is anticipated. Sometimes the initial infection can be a little sensitive but we always endeavour to use numbing paste at all times to help. Most of the times, it’s no worse than a little pinch.

Do you do payment plans?

Spreading the cost of treatment over a number of visits or over a period of time is more than reasonable to request.

Just bare in mind, dental cavities continue to grow unless they are addressed. Waiting too long means that a simple cavity could turn into a bigger problem especially if the bacteria enter the “pulp” or “nerve” of the tooth.

I'm concerned about being told that I need treatment when I don't really need it. How can I trust you?

This is actually more common than us dentists would liketo believe however we know and understand that you may have concerns about treatment prescribed especially when there is no pain. This is actually quite normal. We can facilitate second opinions with colleagues and specialists if you’re ever unsure. Just remember, we never take anything personally if you query our recommended treatment methods.
